In regards to my race committee experience....
Catherine Connolly, Happy Dance/Meisje Team
Wednesday night, 23 Feb 2005:
I asked 5 people tonight and not one could tell me what PHRF stands for. The Race Committee instructions
are very confusing. There are two sets of them in the coveted 'book' and they conflict. The ratings (how on
earth do you figure a negative 12?), the starts, boats not checking in with their names or what fleet they
are racing in.... Okay so the math gets me and racing on Meisje, I only see transoms and should know these
names, but I don't, however, I digress.
Race Committee instructions are confusing and unclear.
What could help this process is
- Boats being on time - At 5:25 tonight, I saw 3 boats, that made it one
or two starts, not four, boats were late (and I KNOW this is Corpus, not the Americas Cup) and it was late,
we had 4 starts to being with but changed it because we felt time was running out and we HAD to get a
course up so we went with 2 starts.
- Boats checking in with the Committee - Sailing close to the start does
not mean "checking in".
- Someone needs to explain to me what a "working sail" is, why on earth would you
have a 'non-working sail' on a !@#$%^ sailboat??????
- Learning how to figure negative numbers
- A laminated copy of flags, horns and times for 1 start, 2 starts, 3 starts, 4 starts posted one the box.
I am very able, willing and happy to help make this easier. By the way,
there is a party at 807 Coleman Avenue this Saturday the 26th at 4pm. The
number is 882-8288, call me... and Corey, you owe me BIG time.
