Sailboat racing on Corpus Christi Bay

Same course, same start times, every Sat. & Sun.
Individual starts. First boat across the finish line wins.

New pursuit start times will be posted as summer approaches.

How It Works:

  1.  Find your individual start time on the Membership page. (If you are not a member, join CCMORF.)
  2. Any Sat. or Sun. this summer, hit the regular, Wed. night starting line at your prescribed time, sail out the Gap, around #3, around #19, and back (course details).
  3. Before returning through the Gap, hang a life jacket (preferably orange) on your stern rail to identify your boat as a participant.
  4. The first boat across the line wins. Determine your place by counting the boats who crossed ahead of you.
  5. Email web [at] ccmorf.org and let us know how you placed (no finish times are necessary).

CCMRF's summer pursuit races are intended to provide an informal and fun way to bring a little friendly competition to weekend daysailing on Corpus Christi Bay.  They also provide opportunities for sailors to get involved in racing without having to negotiate a crowded start line. Read "How It Works" at the top of this page to get started. The will be no race committee or protests. Additional details are below.

Finishes:

So far two boats have completed the weekend pursuit race course with no one to pursue: Phil Davis's Red and Steve Hamilton's Cute Shoes. We hope the winds will lay and that we'll see some other boats sail the course next weekend. See Pursuit page for participation information.

COURSE DETAILS:

Read "How It Works" at the top of this page if you have not already done so. The course will be the same every Saturday and Sunday this summer. The start/finish line for the pursuit races is the same as line used for Wed. Night races at the end of the Lawrence St. T-Head. After crossing the line at their individually prescribed times, participants will head out the Gap, leave marker #3 to port, leave marker #19 to port, then return through the Gap, and cross the start/finish line. The first boat across wins. There will be no race committee or protests.

FAQ'S

WHAT IS A PURSUIT RACE?

Unlike CCMORF's Wednesday Night races and more competitive weekend racing events, boats do not start at the same time, and race results do not have to be calculated after the finish. In a pursuit race, boats start at different times. Start times have been calculated based on boats' Wednesday Night handicap ratings so that (in theory) they should all end up at the finish line at the same time. The first boat to cross the line wins. (The second boat to cross the finish line, gets second place, etc.) There is no need to report finish times or to calculate results.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Each CCMORF member who owns a boat, has completed a PHRF application, and has paid dues for the current year, has been given an individual start time for the summer pursuit races based on his/her Wednesday Night rating. Start times are listed on the Membership page. If you are not a CCMORF member, join now (only $40/calendar year). All sailors interested in a little friendly competition are encouraged to join CCMORF and to participate.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A START TIME LISTED?
Start times are posted on the Membership page. If you do not have a start time listed, that means that you either need to join CCMORF (only $40/calendar year) or update your membership information.

HOW DO I GET THE ACCURATE TIME?
Use the time on a GPS receiver, use a watch that has a built-in receiver for the time signals ("atomic" clocks), or tune a shortwave receiver to 5000, 10000, or 15000 MHz and use the time clicks to set your watch. (Using the time on a GPS receiver will be easiest for most.)

WILL THERE BE A RACE COMMITTEE?
No. It's all on the honor system.

WILL RESULTS BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE?
If participants email a list of boats who finished and the order in which they finished, results will be posted to the main page of the website. Selected photos will be posted.

Email additional questions to web [at] ccmorf.org (replace [at] with the @ sign).
